Horror On a Budget

We've all heard how Ed Wood's infamous Plan 9 From Outer Space is the worst movie ever made, though I would say the charms of this morbid mess are rooted in a much deeper plot than mere camp. Certainly there is plenty to chuckle at, but cardboard tombstones and bad dialogue do not account for this film's appeal. Despite a legendary level of ineptitude, Wood somehow managed to craft something that captures the spirit of a nightmare.

It is a nightmare of Halloween, perfectly capturing, often through the cheapness that is it's chief claim to fame, the iconography of the holiday. Falling asleep after a night of trick or treat revelry, we find our dreams haunted by real ghouls and aliens wandering amongst the cardboard stones in a front yard cemetery that suddenly contains real corpses.
